FAQ: ASA Docking Endorsement

diagramMany sailors are a bit uneasy when docking a boat before and after sailing. Understandably so! It’s no easy feat to maneuver even smaller boats in and out of crowded harbors—but it’s also necessary.

There are many factors to consider when chartering a bareboat, and a docking endorsement is at the top of the list for many. So how can you get one, and do you even need one? Here’s everything you need to know about getting an ASA docking endorsement.

What Is ASA 118?

The American Sailing Association offers the ASA 118 certification to teach sailors how to dock a boat as safely and confidently as possible. The course includes educational materials as well as real-life learning opportunities out on the water.

Do I Need an ASA Docking Endorsement?

One common question we hear a lot is whether or not it’s necessary to take ASA 118. If you plan to sail on your own vessel and learning to dock is best in your marina. Why? The course will help you learn how to operate your boat in the tightest spaces to minimize accident risk when moving in and out of docking areas.

But if you are chartering a yacht with Go Sail Virgin Islands or most other charter companies around the world, the charter company will take over the reins in getting your boat in and out of the docking area. Don’t worry you do not need to practice docking with your charter and risk any damage. You don’t need a docking endorsement to sail!

Where Can I Sign Up for ASA 118?

There are many places you can sign up for ASA 118. We recommend looking at the ASA website for courses in your local waters

How Much Is an ASA Docking Endorsement?

This depends on where you take the course.

What Do I Need to Know If I Don’t Have a Docking Endorsement?

You don’t need a docking endorsement for chartering in the US Virgin Islands or British Virgin Islands, but you will need to know how to anchor and moor your boat. Both of these skills are taught during our courses Series 1 in the introductory ASA courses. Don’t worry— they are much easier skills to gain than docking!
